Talk of the "Epstein files" — aka documents surrounding the criminal history of convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein — has been everywhere lately, including Washington.

There have been months of back and forth and changing stories about the files within the Trump administration, all while other politicians and the public continue to call for greater transparency. President Trump has repeatedly urged his supporters to drop the subject and move on.

The Trump administration stated that it would release Epstein-related documents, and in February, Attorney General Pam Bondi said that his supposed client list was "sitting on my desk" to be reviewed. But earlier this month, the Department of Justice and the FBI released a memo stating that there is no client list and that they found no evidence of foul play in Epstein's death in prison.

Trump and Epstein's friendship is well-documented, which has led people to question why Trump keeps trying to quiet the national conversation about the files.

Most recently, Trump appeared on Fox News for coverage of his meeting with the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He's currently on a five-day trip in Scotland, in part to check in on his own golf courses.

In a conversation with reporters, Trump talked about Epstein. "And by the way, I never went to the island. And Bill Clinton went there supposedly, uhh, 28 times," he says.

"I never went to the island, but Larry Summers, I hear, went there. He was the head of Harvard. And many other people that are very big people. Nobody ever talks about them," Trump goes on.

"I never had the privilege of going to his island," he then says.

"And I did turn it down, but a lot of people in Palm Beach were invited to his island. In one of my very good moments, I turned it down. I didn't want to go to his island," he finishes, moving on to another question.

For context, Trump is talking about Little Saint James, located in the US Virgin Islands near Saint Thomas. Epstein owned Little Saint James from 1998 until his death in 2019. Accusers of Epstein have said that it was used as a central location in a vast global sex trafficking operation.

So, people were understandably shocked by Trump's wording that visiting the island would have been a "privilege." This person said it "Makes my skin shrink up and my stomach cringe."

This user compared Trump's comment to when he said "I wish her well" about Epstein's close accomplice and convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell.

This person called Trump's wording "sarcasm," but it seems like pretty weird sarcasm to me.

And finally, this person said that "the word 'privilege' for an island that was used for sex trafficking tells us everything we need to know."
